Sambhal – A conflict surrounding a renewed survey of a mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district turned violent on Sunday. During the survey, an agitated crowd resorted to stone-pelting and arson, prompting police to use tear gas shells and lathicharge to disperse them.
Reports suggest over 20 police personnel and around two dozen civilians sustained injuries. Tragically, three people have reportedly lost their lives, though official confirmation is awaited.
Following the unrest, Moradabad police have been placed on high alert. Senior officials, including Circle Officers (COs) and Station House Officers (SHOs), conducted foot patrols in their respective areas.
Drone surveillance has been deployed, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) has activated the social media monitoring team to curb the spread of misinformation.
Police officers in areas like Mughalpura, Galshaheed, and Civil Lines conducted flag marches to ensure public safety and maintain order. District Magistrate Anuj Singh and SSP Satpal Antil also joined the foot patrol in various parts of the city.
The fatalities reportedly include individuals named Roman, Bilal, and Naeem. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to stabilize the situation, with round-the-clock monitoring by the authorities.
Key city junctions such as Chandousi Chauraha, Shankar Chauraha, Hospital Chauraha, and Yashoda Chauraha have been barricaded to control movement. Commuters are being redirected via alternative routes.
The city has been turned into a fortress, with a heavy police presence maintaining strict vigilance. Streets remain deserted as authorities work to restore normalcy.
Senior officials, including Commissioner Anjaneya Kumar Singh and DIG Muniraj G, visited the affected areas, urging citizens to exercise restraint and cooperate with legal proceedings. Meanwhile, Deputy Collector Ramesh Babu sustained serious injuries in the violence and has been hospitalized.
The situation remains tense, with the administration on high alert to prevent further escalation.
