Former MP Dhananjay Singh and three others acquitted under the Gangster Act

On Friday, former MP Dhananjay Singh, Puneet and Ashutosh received relief in the Gangster Act case filed a year and a half after the Belaon double murder in the Kerakat police station area of Jaunpur. The court of Additional Sessions Judge IV, Mohammad Shariq Siddiqui, acquitted all three due to lack of evidence.
Sanjay Nishad and Nandlal Nishad were shot dead on April 1, 2010, over a toll tax dispute at the Belaon Ghat bridge in Kerakat.
Four accused, including former MP Dhananjay Singh, were charged in the case on July 3, 2025. Additional Sessions Judge Shariq Siddiqui acquitted all of them due to lack of evidence, while the trial in the gangster case was ongoing.
In this case, a year and a half after the Belaon massacre, the then-In-Charge Inspector of Kerakat, Gurdeep Singh Sarna, filed a case under the Gangsters Act against former MP Dhananjay, Puneet, and Ashutosh.
The police conducted an investigation and filed the case diary in court. Witness statements were recorded. Based on the witness statements, the court found no case against the accused and acquitted them for lack of evidence.
