Kerala – 143 dead, 128 injured so far in Wayanad landslide

“Landslides caused massive devastation in various hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday. So far 143 people have died due to this natural disaster, while 128 are injured. The army’s relief and rescue operations are continuing”

In response to the landslide disaster in Wayanad, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) District Headquarters (Kerala and Mahe) and ICG Station Beypore have dispatched Disaster Relief Teams (DRT) to the affected area.

Teams are active to provide immediate relief and assistance to the communities affected by the disaster. The relief team consists of highly trained ICG personnel and a dedicated medical team.

The team is equipped with essential disaster relief material, such as rubber inflatable boats for rescue operations, diesel powered pumps to manage water and drainage issues, life jackets for safety and protection of personnel in adverse weather conditions.

Raincoat and gum boots.The landslides have left a trail of destruction. Many houses have been razed to the ground, rivers are in spate and many trees have been uprooted.

Rescue teams of the Army, Navy and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are searching for victims amid bad weather and several agencies are working together to provide necessary assistance to the affected people.

According to a senior government source, several landslides have occurred following heavy rains in the hilly areas of Meppadi in the district, raising fears that the death toll may rise.
