Kerala – 123 people killed in Wayanad landslide, 250 evacuated

There is news of landslide in the hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad district of Kerala. So far 123 people have died due to this natural disaster, while 128 have been injured.
At the same time, hundreds of people are feared to be stranded. The local disaster relief force personnel are carrying out relief and rescue operations. Difficult challenges are being faced due to rain.
According to the Meteorological Department, the coming few days may be worse in Wayanad.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rains for Wayanad and an orange alert for neighboring Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur districts. Rescue operations may be affected due to heavy rains.
On the rescue operation after the landslide in Wayanad, the Indian Army said that the Indian Army, along with the NDRF and other agencies, is carrying out rescue operations in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad.
About 150 people have been rescued from Mudakkai village, provided medical assistance and evacuated to safer places.
Apart from four contingents with a total strength of about 225 personnel already deployed for the operation, two more contingents with a capacity of about 140 personnel are on standby in Thiruvananthapuram, so that they can be airlifted in a short time if needed.
