US President Donald Trump on Monday praised India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi without naming them, saying, “India is a great country led by a very good friend of mine.”
Addressing a summit of world leaders in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh after Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire to end the nearly two-year-long war in Gaza, Trump said he thinks “India and Pakistan will get along very well.”
“India is a great country, led by a very good friend of mine. He’s done a fantastic job. I think Pakistan and India will get along very well,” Trump said, looking at Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif standing behind him.
“There’s nothing left to say, let’s go home.”
Earlier, praising Sharif and Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir, Trump invited the Pakistani Prime Minister to address the gathering.
After Sharif’s address, Trump returned to the podium and praised Sharif’s speech as excellent. He also joked that there was nothing left to say, so let’s go home.
I’ve stopped eight wars so far – Trump
Trump has claimed to have resolved seven disputes, including the one between India and Pakistan. However, he has now increased this number to eight by adding the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Upon not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, the US President said on Monday, “I’ve stopped eight wars so far. It’s an honor to do so. I’ve saved millions of lives.”
Trump further added, “The Nobel Peace Prize that was recently awarded was selected for 2024.” But some people were saying I could be an exception because all the wars I stopped happened this year, 2025. Yet, I didn’t do it for the Nobel Prize. I did it to save lives.
Trump has been taking credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
Donald Trump announced on social media on May 10 that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “complete and immediate” ceasefire with US mediation.
The US President repeated his claim dozens of times that he had helped “resolve” the conflict between India and Pakistan. India has consistently maintained that the agreement to end the conflict with Pakistan was reached after direct talks between the Director Generals of the two armies.
